Walking the fence line

I met an antelope
In the woods
Him longingly
Walking a fence line
So wanting to be on the other side

I pause, watching…
Big open land just opposite
‘Why don’t you run free– that way?’

Distressed
He momentarily considers
His other option
Straying off course
But shortly returning
To walking the fence
Not noticing
At the one place
He stepped away
A tree had fallen
And created a pass

I am struck
Deeply with irony
I feel his heart
His absolute yearning to go
‘This way’

I shed a few tears with him
‘Don’t we all know this well?’

He keeps walking
Determined
Trusting
No knowings of ‘failure’

Ten feet from the corner
He stops
Not comprehending
This human construct
‘Oh, oh, please please keep going
You’re almost there’
He ponders
Weighs his options

And once again
Follows the nonnegotiable
Pull of his heart
Passing the corner
Realizing
He is free!!!

I cry a little more
In joy
Taking in the deep lesson
Of never giving up
On the strong call within
To go a certain way
Even when it appears
To be against all odds…
